Lava Beads

Over the weekend I went to the local bead store I found these really cool lava beads. They are about the size of a quarter. I made a simple pair of earrings and am working on a necklace. The necklace will use 8 lava beads. The center 'bar with stone' is a piece of round silver wire. It's about 5mm in diameter. I forged one end to be square, then I files off the edges. The top has two rings and the bottom a stone mounted in a bezel. The stone is pink tourmaline. It's not quite finished as I need to drill a hole in the silver wire and I don't have a drill press.

You are the master of minimalism. Love the center point. Would never think of that myself.

Re the drilling...do you have a flexshaft? I use mine for hole drilling in a lot of things. Another option could be to solder a small piece of tubing to the top of the silver wire...but that wouldn't give you the same effect of having the silver wire sit above the line of lava beads.

What are your plans for the beads...will you set them, wire wrap them or simply string them?

I tried drilling with my Dremel tools but it has too high an RPM, the drill bit will not cut. I also tried my hand electric drill, but it was just too unstable and dangerous! I could see the drill bit breaking and driving right through a finger...I have a friend with a drill press so when I get a moment I'll stop by his shop and drill the hole.

As for the beads I plan to string them in a pattern similar to what is in the photo. I may put something between each lava bead but I am not sure yet. I will need to see what it looks like first.
